What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a unique form of healthcare that is used by millions of people each day and was first discovered by D.D. Palmer in 1895. Chiropractic uses the hands to gently and specifically realign the spine to remove interference and irritation. A misalignment in the spine is known as a “subluxation.” The brain communicates with our body by sending signals through our central and peripheral nervous systems. These messages are like messages being sent through phone lines. If the phone lines are damaged, or not connected properly, the messages cannot get to their appropriate destination. This same analogy can be applied to the messages of our nervous system. If a bone is out of place, the message cannot be sent to that organ or muscle properly.
If a child is suffering from an ear infection, often the first recommendation is antibiotics. If antibiotics are not effective, often a second, more potent antibiotic is given. If the child has so many ear infections within a 6-month time period, often surgery (ear tubes) are recommended. Although we are not against the use of medications, and we understand that there are situations that may require them, there may be other options that patients may want to look to first. Many patients find relief from ear infections with the use of Chiropractic care, especially babies and young children. Often a slight misalignment (subluxation) of the upper neck can affect the ability of the ear to drain properly. A gentle realignment of the upper cervical spine can often allow for proper drainage of the ear, improving the ear infection, but more importantly, preventing ear infections in the future.
When you apply this way of thinking to all areas of the body, you understand why Chiropractors care more about how your body is “functioning” as opposed to how you’re “feeling.” It’s our favorite “F-word".” Our approach in the office allows us to access and detect problems in the spine, often without patients knowing it was there. What tools do we use in the office to help us:
Visualization - Visualizing how the patient walks, sits, and stands can give us valuable information before their exam even begins.
Instrumentation - The use of a thermal instrument to detect heat changes associated with inflammation, and spinal misalignment.
Palpation - The use of the hands to determine areas of the body that are tender and painful.
X-Rays: “To see is to know. To not see is to guess.” We are very specific on supplement recommendations based on bloodwork, why would this be any different for chiropractic care with their spine? X-Rays, along with the previous tools, add to our ability to determine where and how a patient should be adjusted.
